Building Civic Literacies Across the Curriculum

The Largest Assembly of History/Social Studies Teachers in the State

Marriott Columbus University Area, 3100 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43202.

Theme: Building Civic Literacies Across the Curriculum

This year’s conference returns to our state’s capital (Columbus), and entertains timely topics in addition to our ongoing search for excellence in social studies teaching and learning.  The conference provides an opportunity to rejuvenate your teaching strategies and collaborate with some of our leaders in social studies education.  When you attend the conference, you will:

  • Learn from over 90 presentations by the leading social studies researchers and practitioners
  • Receive classroom-ready resources
  • Interact with well-known speakers and educators as they share their ideas, experiences, and knowledge
  • Share teaching strategies and solutions with peers, building your own learning community around topics that matter to you
  • Discover the latest teaching products and services

This year’s conference addresses the following four conference sub-themes:

  1. Teaching to promote engaged democratic citizenship in the face of the 2018 mid-term elections.  How do we best incorporate civic learning across the curriculum to best prepare youth to confront issues facing citizens, communities, and our world today?
  2. Information literacy in the age of fake news. How do we integrate media literacy in the classroom to create better informed and critically thinking students?  How can educators help students distinguish fact from fiction?
  3. Meaningful use of technology to promote civic learning. How best can new technologies work to advance student learning in the social studies?
  4. An increasingly global and multicultural age.  How do we present leverage research-based strategies to prepare youth for an increasingly global and multicultural age?
